Your Message: Mr. Henderson: As you know, the Willow Run Ypsilanti Transmission Operation (YTO) in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan was recently slated for closure. I'm upset to hear that the "Arsenal of Democracy" - a staple of the community and country for decades - will be shut down despite its well-documented advantages over comparable plants, including one in Mexico. Furthermore, the Willow Run facility can produce a six-speed transmission for $145 less than any of these similar factories. Shutting down Willow Run would be a devastating blow to the community as well as a failure to recognize the outstanding quality of the transmissions produced by the UAW workers employed there. According to GM's own internal scorecard, Willow Run produces at the company's highest level of transmission-assembly quality. Mr. Henderson, for well over half a century the workers at Willow Run have put this country in the air with B-24 bombers in WWII and then right back on the road ever since. The employees deserve better, and GM deserves better, than to shut down one of the most efficient and effective operations in the country.
